Joseph Holston was born in Washington, D.C. in 1944. His self-directed study incorporated painting, drawing, and printmaking at Montgomery College in Maryland and Howard University in Washington, D.C., including mentoring by such notable artists as Louis Mailou Jones and James Lesesne Wells. Holston's Cubist abstractionist style and multi-media art utilize bold and vibrant color, as well as subtle black and white etchings. Many of Holston's works incorporate musical themes and elements. His works are included in several private collections including those of Patti LaBelle, Angela Bassett, and Wynton Marsalis.
