Catalog for the exhibition "Portraits of Who We Are," one of few exhibitions depicting African American self-portraits. Self-portraits have become a fashionable staple of artistic practice and have a particular command on our attention as issues such as identity, modernity, and gender are considered within their cultural and historical contexts. Presented at the University of Maryland's Driskell Center in 2018 and featuring more than 50 works that spanned from 1915 to 2017, this exhibition provided the viewing audience documentation of the existence of the subject and the cultural and social setting, while revealing multiple aspects of a deeper view of our collective human evolution and shared humanity. Out of print.
